Furniture Clinic Re-Colouring Balm | 250 ml
Furniture Clinic Leather Re-Colouring Balm is a leather balm with color pigments that restores color and appearance, as well as softens old, worn, and faded "absorbent" leather types, such as aniline and other types of leather without a surface finish. There are 16 different shades of pigmented leather balm available across the entire color spectrum from white to black.
The pigmented leather balm works effectively on surfaces that have been exposed to and faded by sunlight or heat, and is ideal for revitalizing dried-out and faded areas. The balm absorbs 100% into the leather if there is no protective finish, and does not transfer onto clothing or other items. However, we recommend finishing with Leather Protection Cream to achieve a softer, protected, and durable surface. The protection cream also contains UV filters to guard against future sun fading.
Instructions: Clean the leather thoroughly before applying the colored leather balm. Because the leather is absorbent, we recommend using a foaming cleaner such as Ultra Clean leather cleaner (you can create foam by applying the cleaner to a sponge and "squeezing" it). Inadequate cleaning of the leather surface can prevent the colored balm from penetrating properly, resulting in a less satisfactory outcome.
Apply the leather balm in a single layer. If a darker shade is desired, apply additional layers until the leather is saturated. Over time, the color may fade again, but this process can be slowed by using Furniture Clinic Leather Protection Cream. Typically, reapplication of the balm is needed every three years.
NOTE! If the leather has scratches, the pigmented leather balm will only work if the scratches are lighter than the leather color. If the scratch is darker, it needs to be filled first (e.g., with Leather Binder or Heavy Filler leather filler). Then, the repaired area should be colored with Leather Colourant, as the balm cannot penetrate through Binder and Filler.
NOTE 2! Re-Colouring Balm is less effective on fully finished leather, which has a protective surface coating. Many furniture pieces and most car interiors have fully finished leather. You can test if the leather is absorbent by dropping a water droplet on the surface. If the water is immediately absorbed and leaves a dark spot, the leather is absorbent. If the water bead stays on the surface before absorbing, the leather has a protective finish and Re-Colouring Balm should not be used. In that case, use Leather Colourant.
Similarly, the pigmented balm is less effective if the leather has been repaired with glue, leather filler, or Leather Binder. In such cases, Leather Colourant is recommended to cover the repaired areas.
