Antique Leather Finish | Furniture Clinic Shadow Finish | 500 ml
Furniture Clinic Shadow Finish is used for furniture with an antique finish, typically found in Chesterfield styles. The finish is sprayed in thin layers over the sealed base color, allowing the base color to show through. In England, this is known as "rub off leather," where a top layer of a darker shade is applied over the lighter base color, which is usually red, green, blue, or brown. This color is designed to wear over time as the leather ages. However, often the wear can be excessive, leaving large areas where the lighter base color shows through, which can look quite worn. This is very common with Chesterfield furniture.
How does it work? Rub off leather is made by tanning and dyeing the leather in a clear base color, which is then sealed with a lacquer. Next, a darker shade of the same color is sprayed on. This dark shade is almost black. The top layer is then carefully polished with a special agent to allow the base color to faintly shine through the darkened surface, giving it the unique antique look.
Over time, this top layer wears off and the lighter underlying color shows through, causing the sofa to look blotchy and more worn than originally intended. This can be remedied by spraying a new top layer of the darker leather finish, Shadow Finish. The color is lightly sprayed in thin layers directly onto the underlying lighter surface. The goal is not to fully cover the base color but to let it show through, creating the iconic Chesterfield effect. Typically, areas around buttons and corners are sprayed slightly darker than other areas to enhance the effect.
