Leather Colourant | Furniture Clinic Leather Colourant | 250 ml
Furniture Clinic Leather Colourant is a water-based polyurethane leather colourant suitable for dyeing all types of leather. This leather colourant offers unique flexibility and resistance to scratches and marks. The dyed leather looks and feels like new, and the colour is permanent, ensuring it won't peel or fade. It will not transfer onto clothing or other materials. There is a wide range of base colours to choose from, and the colours can be mixed to create an unlimited number of shades. Applying the colour is simple with a sponge, and it can also be sprayed on using an airbrush or other spray equipment for a more even finish.
The leather colourant is suitable for:
- Touching up minor scuffs and small damage on leather
- Painting leather after a leather repair
- Full restoration of worn leather
- Re-colouring or changing the colour of leather. It is possible to change black leather to white and vice versa, as the Leather Colourant provides full coverage.
Furniture Clinic Leather Colourant can be used to re-colour or restore the colour of furniture, car interiors, clothing, shoes, handbags, equestrian products, and other items made from leather and vinyl. Note that the leather colourant is less effective on suede and nubuck.
For the best results, seal the leather colourant with Furniture Clinic Leather Finish. The finish enhances durability and provides a soft surface with a gloss level of your choice, from matte to glossy. Colour without a finish may result in a rough, rubber-like, and shiny surface, and can sometimes feel sticky without a finish.
Here’s how to use it:
- First, thoroughly clean the leather with Ultra Clean leather cleaner.
- If the leather is coated or pigmented (i.e., a type of leather with a surface finish), remove as much of this as possible with Leather Prep (Note: Do not use Leather Prep on aniline, semi-aniline, or other absorbent leathers without a surface finish).
- Next, wipe the leather with Alcohol Cleaner to remove loose colour residues and old grease and wax. This allows the new leather colour to penetrate and bond with the leather, providing a solid foundation. Removing all grease and wax is crucial for proper colour adhesion.
- Apply the first layer of leather colour with a sponge. Allow it to dry completely before applying additional layers. Use a hairdryer for faster drying. For a smoother finish, the leather colour can be sprayed on with an airbrush or other spray equipment (though not necessary, multiple layers can be applied with a sponge). Apply the colour in thin layers until it covers and meets your satisfaction. It’s important to let each layer dry completely before applying the next. The colour is flexible and will not crack, no matter how many layers are applied. Note that the colour will darken slightly as it dries.
- Seal the leather colourant with a leather finish, Leather Finish (choose from Glossy, Semi-Gloss, Satin, Semi-Matte, and Matte). The finish seals the leather colour, provides a protective and durable surface, and gives the desired gloss. Without a finish, the leather colour may result in a shiny and slightly rubbery surface, making it more susceptible to friction wear.
- For extra durability on high-wear areas, add Cross Linker Eco to the finish.
Note: HC and LC stand for High Concentrate and Low Concentrate, referring to the pigment concentration of the colour. When mixing leather colours, use LC. HC is used for dyeing leather in a single colour without mixing, such as black.
If you follow the instructions, you will achieve a surface so durable that it is difficult to scratch the leather.
How long does it last? The colourant is as strong as new leather, tested to British and European standards. It is hard to specify exactly how long it will last (as it depends on how much the product is used/worn), but we can confidently say it will last as long as the original leather did. That is, if it has been five years since you bought the product and it now needs restoration, you can expect it to last another five years.
