Has your favorite leather armchair seen better days? Is the leather seat in your car sun-bleached, or are cracks starting to appear on your sofa? As leather ages, you are often faced with the question: should I restore or replace it?
Here we guide you through what speaks in favor of restoration – and when it may actually be worth rethinking.
When restoration is a wise choice
-
The injuries are superficial.
Whether it's dry leather, fading, minor cracks or surface stains, it's almost always worth restoring. With the right cleaning, paint and finish, the result can be as good as new. -
The leather is of high quality
Older furniture is often made of better leather than many new ones. If the frame and upholstery are intact – invest in preserving what you have! -
There is affective value
An inherited armchair or a design classic is not easy to replace. Restoration is not only a practical solution – it is also a way to breathe new life into something with history. -
Economy & sustainability
Restoring is often cheaper than buying new – especially when it comes to high-quality leather furniture or car interiors. You save money, and it’s also a choice that preserves quality and protects the environment. Don’t let a few cracks fool you into throwing away something that can be saved.
Signs that it may be time to replace
-
The frame is broken or unstable
If the furniture is rickety, crooked or has a sagging seat, restoration may not be enough. The same goes for if the upholstery is broken. -
Deep damage to the leather
If there are continuous tears, deep cracks that expose underlying material, or if the leather is hard as cardboard – then it is difficult (but not impossible) to save. -
Low quality material
If it is artificial leather or very cheap leather, restoration can be more time-consuming than it is worth. The paint will adhere less well and the result will not last as long.
The way forward – what you can do
If you are hesitant – start with a smaller effort. A proper cleaning, a little moisturizing and maybe a recoloring can do wonders. In our webshop you will find both products and guides to get started.
